Job Description

Site: Toronto General Hospital

Department: Preadmission Clinic

Reports to: Nurse Manager

Wage Range: $40.24 - 57.68 per hour (start rate is non-negotiable and in accordance with collective agreement requirements)

Hours: 37.5 Hours per Week

Shifts: 8 Hour Shifts

Status: Temporary Full-Time (6 Months with Possible Extension)

Closing Date: March 26, 2026

Duties

As a member of the UHN, the Nursing Multi-disciplinary Team and Preadmission, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.

The Principal Responsibilities Include

Completing comprehensive, systematic pre-operative patient assessments including medication and health history reviews, ECG analysis, lab work/diagnostic test result interpretation, and providing patient and family education pertaining to the surgical episode of care
Applying knowledge of nursing science, theory, skill and critical decision making in the provision of compassionate, collaborative and competent care in accordance with the UHN Professional Practice Model for Nursing and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN
Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure
Demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession
Performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care
Performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.

Qualifications

Current Certificate of (licensure)/registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
Completion of a Critical Care Certificate required
Minimum three (3) years recent direct perianesthesia (PACU) nursing experience required or
Three (3) to Five (5) years critical care experience and surgical nursing experience required
Experience with 12 lead ECG interpretations required and completion of Coronary I and II
Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
Knowledge of nursing research methodology
Demonstrated understanding of factors that impact patient outcomes following anesthesia and surgery
Demonstrated understanding of surgical episode of care including post-op surgical care and recovery
Demonstrated ability in advanced assessment skills, ability to synthesize information, problem solve, and make clinical decisions
Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and good judgment with the ability to multi-task
Demonstrated leadership in clinical practice, quality improvement and research
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and life-long learning
Demonstrated comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for tertiary level patients
Demonstrated understanding and application of principles of patient-centered care
Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent time management skills
Excellent decision-making, problem recognition, and problem solving, skills
Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Commitment to collaborative practice
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment to meet the needs of a changing population
Ability to assess changes and re-establish priorities
Ability to utilize information technology
Ability to interpret and communicate appropriate policies and procedures to other staff
BScN required
