Job Title: Test Engineer (Contract – Potential for FTE Conversion)

Location: San Diego, CA (Onsite)

Duration: 6-Month W2 Contract (Potential for Full-Time Conversion)

Pay Rate: $50–$60/hour (DOE)

About the Role

Russell Tobin is supporting a leading medical device organization in hiring a Test Engineer to join their pilot manufacturing engineering team. This team stands up early-stage manufacturing lines that support new product development by prototyping, evaluating, and validating product designs.

This role is critical in developing and validating test systems and software that capture, store, and visualize manufacturing data generated from pilot production lines.

Key Responsibilities

Develop test methods using Measurement System Analysis (MSA) and/or Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility (GR&R) to assess and improve measurement reliability.
Lead Test Method Validation (TMV) activities including protocol development, execution, and reporting.
Create and release test fixtures and equipment (CAD, drawings, prototyping, fabrication, and manufacturing implementation).
Plan and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) to determine optimal processing and test methods.
Analyze data using statistical tools (JMP or Minitab) to evaluate method and process performance.
Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.
Author and maintain validation documentation including protocols, reports, and risk assessments.

Required Skills (Top 3 Non-Negotiables)

Test Method Validation (TMV) and/or Gage R&R experience
Experience with vision-based equipment for dimensional inspection
Medical device industry experience

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

Mechanical tensile or compression testing experience (Instron)
Statistical data analysis experience using JMP or Minitab
Process development experience

Additional Qualifications

Strong problem-solving skills across destructive and non-destructive testing
Preventative mindset with ability to anticipate technical risks
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Flexibility to occasionally support 2nd shift based on equipment availability
Experience with project tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and Smartsheet
