About The Role

The Junior Software Developer (Industry Placement) supports the delivery of high-quality software that brings the SFG20 standard and our expertise to life.

By contributing to real development work under the guidance of experienced developers, this role helps ensure our software remains reliable, secure, and continuously improving, while also providing valuable hands-on industry experience as part of a 12-month university placement.

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of software features using JavaScript, Node.js, and related technologies.
Work collaboratively within an agile (Kanban) development team, taking part in planning, stand-ups, and team discussions.
Assist with refining user stories and implementing changes based on business and technical requirements.
Participate in code reviews, both receiving and providing feedback under the guidance of senior developers.
Support the development and maintenance of automated tests to help ensure software quality and reliability.
Assist with troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving application issues, escalating where appropriate.
Gain exposure to deployment, release, and monitoring processes in a production environment.
Work closely with developers, testers, and other teams to understand how software is delivered in a commercial setting.
Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing within the development team.
Continuously develop technical skills and apply university learning to real-world software development challenges.

Essential Experience

Currently studying towards a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline that includes a 12-month placement year.
Exposure to programming ((JavaScript, Python, or similar) through university coursework, personal projects, or placements.
An understanding of software development concepts and principles.
Willingness to learn professional development practices, including agile ways of working.
Familiarity with version control (e.g. Git) or a strong willingness to learn.
Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Clear communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Enthusiasm for technology and a genuine interest in software development.

Desirable Experience

Experience or coursework involving JavaScript, Node.js, or web-based technologies.
Personal or university projects that demonstrate an interest in software development
A GitHub profile or portfolio showcasing relevant work.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate a pre-existing right to work and travel within the UK. We are unfortunately not able to offer sponsorship. Documentary evidence will be required.
