Job Specifications

Job title

Part time product design / software engineer (junior to senior)

Location

Swansea, Wales. Working from the office at least 2 days per week is preferred, but this is negotiable.

Contract

Short term role from 1 January to 31 March, with the option to renew, to be confirmed at least one month before the end date.

2 to 5 days per week, so this can be part time or full time depending on your availability.

We are open to hiring one person, or two people at different levels, for example one junior and one more senior.

About PEBL CIC

PEBL CIC builds low cost tools to help people understand and care for marine and freshwater environments.

Our current products include:

GrowProbe, a multi parameter sensor for water quality and aquaculture
SubCam, an underwater camera system
Supporting environmental probes and data tools

You will be joining a small team working on real hardware that goes in the water and is used by fishers, farmers and coastal communities.

The role

We are gearing up for product launch in 2026. The main focus of this role is firmware and software development to get our products ready for that launch.

You will help refine and stabilise the electronics and embedded software in GrowProbe and SubCam. This includes tasks such as:

Writing and improving firmware for sensors, logging and communications
Working on low level software for data capture, storage and transfer
Helping to test and debug electronics in the lab and in the field
Improving reliability, power use and usability of the systems
Working with the team to turn field feedback into firmware and software improvements

There will also be some work with product design and engineering, such as:

Helping to integrate electronics into housings and mounts
Supporting small changes to mechanical parts where needed for sensors and connectors

The exact mix of work will depend on your skills and experience. For a more junior person there will be more support and learning. For a more senior person there will be more ownership of major firmware and software tasks.

Who we are looking for

You might be a recent graduate or have several years of experience. Job titles are not important, but you might think of yourself as a product design engineer, software engineer, embedded engineer or similar.

You should:

Have a degree or equivalent experience in engineering, computing, product design or a related field
Be based in or near Swansea, or willing to travel in regularly
Be able to come to the office at least 2 days per week, where possible
Have worked on relevant engineering or software projects in the past, through study, work or personal projects
Be happy to work across different tasks and learn new tools as needed

Skills and experience

You do not need to tick every box, but you should bring a good mix of the following, with firmware and software at the core:

Firmware and software

Experience with embedded programming for microcontrollers or similar systems
Writing and testing code for sensors, data logging, or hardware control
Basic understanding of serial protocols, sensor interfaces or similar
Ability to read and work from existing codebases
Good debugging habits and a practical approach to testing

Electronics

Understanding of how firmware, electronics and power systems fit together
Some experience working with development boards, sensors or simple PCBs
Comfortable using lab tools such as multimeters and simple test gear

Product design and engineering

Interest in how electronics sit within housings and physical products
Some experience with mechanical or product design is helpful but not essential

Ways of working

A user centred mindset and interest in learning from end users
Shown eagerness to learn new skills and apply them to real problems
Enjoy working in a small team and getting involved in practical testing

Contract and pay

Start date: 1 January
End date: 31 March
Option to renew, to be discussed at least one month before the end date
2 to 5 days per week, depending on your availability and our fit
Pay range: £30,000 to £50,000 per year equivalent, based on experience and number of days

How to apply

Please respond directly to the LinkedIn post with your application.

A CV is helpful but not essential. If you can, please include links or a PDF with examples of past projects, such as:

Firmware or software you have worked on
Hardware or electronics projects
Any other work that shows how you solve problem
