Job Description

**Job Title:** Software Engineer Intern (Applied AI) **Role Summary:** Support the development and productionization of AI-driven agentic workflows for Merge’s Agent Handler platform. Collaborate with product managers and engineers to prototype, evaluate, and ship reliable, observable, and cost‑effective AI utilities. **Expectations:** - Deliver high‑quality code in Python and a typed backend language. - Conduct rigorous data preparation, model benchmarking, and evaluation. - Communicate clearly and document work for reproducibility and team knowledge sharing. - Operate within fast‑paced, collaborative, in‑person environment. **Key Responsibilities:** - Build and iterate on agentic workflows, from prompt design to tool‑calling and evaluation. - Implement and benchmark model‑ and retrieval‑based methods for classification, extraction, and decision‑making. - Design offline and online evaluation frameworks (golden sets, regression tests, success metrics). - Prototype developer‑facing utilities and internal services to improve reliability, latency, and cost control. - Partner with product and engineering on experiment design, scoping, and production roll‑outs. - Contribute to documentation, internal playbooks, and repeatable AI development processes. **Required Skills:** - Proficiency in Python and familiarity with a typed language used in backend development (e.g., Java, Go, C#). - Experience with at least one of: LLM tool‑calling, Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG), fine‑tuning, or structured model output evaluation. - Data wrangling, API usage, and building small services or scripts. - Strong written and verbal communication with attention to detail and reproducibility. **Required Education & Certifications:** - Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
